Pilgrims 0-2 Ipswich Town

Friendly

by Craig Singleton

Goals from Ian Westlake and Alun Armstrong secured a strong Ipswich Town XI a 2-0 victory over Boston United on Wednesday. Westlake had struck early for Ipswich, whose 16-man squad contained a dozen players with first-team experience, before Armstrong wrapped up the win with an 83rd minute strike. Ipswich had gone close as early as the second minute when Dean Bowditch seized possession and curled an 18-yarder just wide. However, Boston hit back and Richard Logan and Graham Potter both saw efforts blocked by Gerard Nash and Jermaine Wright respectively after Stuart Douglas had given Aidan Collins the slip to cross. Douglas then saw his snapshot-on-the-turn go just wide from Simon Rusk’s rising centre.

Ipswich took the lead in the 15th minute when WESTLAKE drilled low past Steve Croudson following Matthew Richards’ quality pass. Bowditch again went close when his acrobatic shot narrowly cleared Croudson’s crossbar following Westlake’s probing centre. Croudson was forced to pull off a great save to deny Wright’s fierce drive, saving with his legs as Ipswich pressed for another goal to extend their lead. Marshall was next to make a good stop, when palming aside Potter’s 20-yard free-kick. In the second half, Marshall made a great save to deflect Douglas’ piledriver up into the air although Logan ballooned the follow-up header wide. Ipswich doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute when ARMSTRONG saw his dipping 25-yarder drop over a despairing Croudson via a deflection off Potter.

United team: Croudson, Sutch, Chapman, Ellender, Greaves, Hocking, Bennett, Rusk, Douglas, Logan (Duffield 66), Potter. Subs (not used): Balmer, L Thompson, Higgins, Beevers, Clarke, Redfearn.
