Workington 1-0 Pilgrims

FA Cup

Boston United suffered an early blow following their long trip north to play Workington when captain Paul Ellender was ruled out with an ankle injury. This led to Tommy Taylor deciding to play with three at the back, namely Adam Smith, Matt Bloomer and Tony Crane, with Crane taking up the captain's armband. Boston came close to taking the lead in the opening minutes when a free kick by Matt O'Halloran was headed goalwards by a Workington defender but his goalkeeper made a good save. The next chance of note didn't come for half an hour when a shot by Jon Froggatt went straight to the 'keeper. Workington had two great chances just before half time first Michael Reed saw a great shot hit the bar, then Lee Crockett made a lucky save to deny a long range effort by Reed again. Matt O'Halloran had a long range shot that took a deflection early in the second half, but the keeper read it well to make the save. There was drama at both ends on the hour.

First Matt Bloomer had to make a goal-line clearance to deny a Workington header, then a quick break forward allowed Mbiyeye Medine a chance but his shot was well gathered. Workington took the lead in the 74th minute when Michael REED headed home a Matthew Berkeley cross with Lee Crockett only able to deflect the ball onto the post before it crossed the line. Liam Green almost levelled the scores with five minutes left when one on one with the keeper, but he fired well over. Twice in the final minute Workington almost sealed the victory, but hit the post with the first effort and the second was saved. It didn't matter as the home side held on and ended Boston's FA Cup run for the season. After the match Tommy Taylor said: "We didn't penetrate them and that was the sad part of the game."
