Lee Beeson leaps

FC United of Manchester 0-1 Boston United

Unibond League Premier Division

It's not often that Boston United play against opponents who consider them to be the biggest club they have faced in a competitive fixture, but that is the case with FC United of Manchester. Formed just three years ago, they have been steadily rising up through the football pyramid while Boston have been plummeting in the opposite direction. It was however just like being in the League again - playing at Bury's Gigg Lane ground in front of a bumper crowd. And for once the Pilgrims performed away from home. Bank Holiday Monday's don't get much better than this. Tom Matthews was still out injured so Liam Parker deputised again. Tommy Taylor also decided to include Lee Beeson in the starting line-up in place of Stewart Talbot. The first real chance fell to the home side on 12 minutes. A mix up in the Boston defence resulted in Kyle Wilson having a clear sight of the goal but Chris Wright made a tremendous save to palm away his powerful shot for a corner. David Farrell had the ball in the net on 25 minutes just after Lee Beeson had seen his low shot well saved, but Farrell's effort was ruled out for offside. A through ball by Froggatt found Ollie Ryan but he waited too long and was dispossessed before he could get his shot off.

RYAN made amends in the 33rd minute when he got on the end of a long throw by Liam Parker into the heart of the area to slot home from close range and give the Pilgrims the lead. Ryan had another chance just before half time when he slipped between his two markers but his shot was saved. The second half saw few clear cut chances by either side. Jon Rowan had a shot blocked and Beeson's followed up only to see his shot cleared off the line. Ollie Ryan came off with an injury in the 61st minute to be replaced by Kieran Leabon. Ten minutes from the end Wes Parker saw his long range effort go just wide of the post. In stoppage time Wright made a good block to deny Carlos Roca a late equaliser. After the match Tommy Taylor said: "I don't think they would have moaned if went 4-0 up at half-time. We had some good chances. No game is easy any more. On Saturday you would have never thought we had played together. Today we've come out closed people down and passed the ball quite well. If we can play like that every week we've got a good chance."
