Nice tackle

Pilgrims 3-1 Bury

Coca Cola League

Bury have yet to win a League match at York Street so they provided just the sort of opposition required to let the Pilgrims bounce back from their embarassing midweek defeat. Steve Evans rang the changes, well as much as they can be with such a small squad. Out went Alan White and David Galbraith, while Paul Ellender and Simon Rusk dropped to the bench. Jamie Clark - the new signing from Rochdale - went straight into the starting line-up. Boston had the early possession. A couple of free kicks were won allowing Clarke to display his renowned dead ball skills. Peter Till then headed a cross by James Keene just wide of the post. Boston went in front on 27 minutes. The Bury keeper failed to grasp a corner fired into the box by Clarke and the ball fell down to Julian JOACHIM giving him an easy goal from close range - his first since the end of November. JOACHIM doubled his and Boston's tally four minutes later when Keene was fouled by Colin Woodthorpe and the referee awarded a penalty. Bury got a goal back out of the blue seven minutes before half time when Lee CANOVILLE managed to deflect a cross by Allan Smart way over Conrad Logan and into the back of the net.

Joachim came close to getting his hat-trick just before half time when he got on the end of a through ball from Stewart Talbot, but after rounding the keeper he shot wide of the target. The first chance of the second half was created by Keene. The young striker surged forward, beating two defenders before blazing the ball high and wide. Boston increased their lead on the hour when a neat pass by Joachim set up spring chicken Peter TILL who turned his marker and rifled the ball home into the bottom right corner. Bury finished the match strongly without managing to create much in the way of real chances. A shot by Smart was just wide of the upright, then an unlucky bobble saw the ball bounce up and hit David Buchanan's hand just as he got in a good position on the edge of the box. A volley by Newby was blocked by Austin McCann. After the match Steve Evans said: "We've worked hard to get the two goals. It could have been four or five. With Joachim looking a bit more lively today, which is good, I don't think his first one hit the back of the net, but the ref gave it, so we will take it."
