Pilgrims 1-2 Notts County

Coca-Cola League

After flying high against Swindon Town in the FA Cup midweek, Boston United came tumbling back to earth with a lacklustre display that resulted in their first home defeat of the season. Steve Evans stuck with the same line-up that had started against Swindon. The only change was on the bench where defender Lee Canoville returned following his suspension in place of reserve goalkeeper Chris Wright. Surprisingly, on-loan midfielder Ian Ross was dropped entirely. County took the lead after just seven minutes. Former Pilgrim Andy White crossed the ball into the area from the left wing and Glynn HURST bundled the ball across the line, with a bit of help from a despairing lunge by Alan White. Boston soon came close to finding an equaliser. The home side won a series of corners and from one Alan White saw his powerful shot cleared off the line by Kelvin Wilson. On the half hour County 'keeper Kevin Pilkington made a superb save to keep out a header by Simon Rusk. Just before half-time Pilkington had to make another great save to tip over Bradley Maylett's long range effort.

Boston levelled the scores four minutes into the second half. Jason LEE headed home a magnificent cross from the right wing by Simon Rusk. Ben Futcher then beat Pilkington with his shot, but it was just wide of the target. Futcher had another chance a few minutes later, but he headed Maylett's free kick over the bar. A rare Notts County attack ended with David Pipe shooting marginally too high. County got their winning goal eight minutes from time when Andy WHITE deflected Ullathorne's whipped in free kick into the net. The goal condemned Boston to their second successive League defeat - it's almost as if Steve Evans had won the "Manager of the Month" award for October and been struck down by the accompanying curse. After the match Steve Evans said: "We're not going to let the fact that Notts County have come here and made a couple of efforts on goal and run away with a 2-1 win victory get to us. We'll get back on the training ground and prepare for Kidderminster.
