Pilgrims 2-1 Huddersfield Town

LDV Vans Trophy

Boston United progressed to the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy by beating high flying Huddersfield Town 2-1 at York Street. The victory celebrations must however be tempered by the fact that Huddersfield sent over a very weak side containing just five first team regulars and that the game must have resulted in a big financial loss as only a paltry 1593 turned up to watch the match, despite reduced entrance fees. Boston fielded their strongest possible side. Nathan Abbey returned to goal after serving his one match ban and Paul Ellender and Noel Whelan also returned - but only to the subs' bench. Chris Holland kept his place in the side after coming on as a substitute against Bristol Rovers, allowing him to face his old club. Huddersfield had the first scoring chance after five minutes when Matthew Young broke clear with the Boston defence appealing for offside. He was eventually blocked by Mark Greaves. Soon Joachim had a decent shot at goal, but his effort passed across the face of the goal.

Boston went in front on 28 minutes when Alan WHITE got his fourth goal of the season by firing home a loose ball following a free kick into the area by Ian Ross. Boston won a series of corners at the start of the second half, but couldn't make them pay. Huddersfield levelled the scores on 68 minutes when David MIRFIN got on the end of Jon Worthington's through ball before placing his shot past Abbey. Boston regained the lead six minutes later. Brad Maylett finished off a great solo run by slotting the ball into the bottom left corner from the edge of the area. Boston held on to their lead allowing them the dubious honour of another probable loss making match in the second round. After the match Steve Evans said: "It's all down to work on the training ground. The eradication of individual errors has also helped and people in the squad have realised that if they perform on the pitch they will keep the shirt for the next match. We are playing well and the big aim is to carry it on."

United team: Nathan Abbey, Lee Canoville, Ben Futcher, Alan White, Mark Greaves, Chris Holland, Brad Maylett (Danny Thomas 90), Ian Ross, Stewart Talbot, Julian Joachim, Lawrie Dudfield (Jason Lee 82). Subs not used: Paul Ellender, Noel Whelan, Austin McCann.
