Shrewsbury Town 5-0 Pilgrims

Coca-Cola League

At a rain soaked Gay Meadow Boston slumped to their third 5-0 defeat under Steve Evans this year. The abysmal sequence brings back memories of a similar set of heavy losses back in 1960, when Boston sank to the bottom of the Southern League and former hero Ray Middleton lost his job as manager as a consequence. The sooner Evans suffers the same fate, the better - before it's too late. For the first twenty minutes there was little indication of the carnage that would follow. Boston's new young loan-signings from Rangers looked lively. Paul Tait almost gave Boston the lead when he headed a Chris Holland cross goalward, but Ryan Esson in the Shrewsbury goal somehow managed to keep it out with his legs. Bob Davidson soon had another chance but his effort was scrambled off the line by two Shrewsbury defenders. The Shrews took the lead from the penalty spot just before the half-hour following a foul by Mark Albrighton on Sagi Burton. Ben DAVIES slotted the spot kick home into the bottom right corner.

Just before half-time Shrewsbury increased their lead when David Edwards got behind the Boston defence to send in a cross for Derek ASAMOAH to sweep home. Shrewsbury dominated the second half and it was no surprise when they got their third goal on 66 minutes when a misunderstanding between Paul Ellender and Andy Marriott allowed ASAMOAH to nip in and score. Mark Greaves had a chance to pull a goal back, but he sliced his shot wide. Shrewsbury's fourth goal came from substitute Michael SYMES on 82 minutes after Boston had failed to clear a corner. The final goal was scored in injury time when David EDWARDS got on the end of a perfect through ball before producing a well taken strike. After the match Steve Evans said: "Individual errors have cost us. We've got an inadequate referee, the referee was appalling".
