Pilgrims 4-1 Yeovil Town

Nationwide Conference

by Barbara Singleton

Fightback qualities stood Boston United in good stead as they powered to their first Conference victory of the season. The Pilgrims stunningly overcame high-flying Yeovil last night with a superb all-round team display. Their efforts were centred around the dynamic midfield fulcrum of Barnet loanee Paul Wilson and Jim Dick, who defied injury to turn in an authoritative man-of-the-match display. Wilson netted two penalties to overturn an 18th minute opener from Warren Patmore as the visitors draw first blood, but the icing on the cake came with a Mark Rawle strike and a Paul Steele own goal in the final minutes. The win moved United off the bottom and up three places, boss Steve Evans saying: "We have been waiting for this and we thoroughly deserved it. We have dominated teams in so many of our matches so far this season, but without the rightful rewards." For a spell in the first half, though, it seemed as if it was going to be another night of frustrating misfortune.

In the opening throes Paul Fewings fired inches too high and then had a header from a Wilson corner cleared off the line by Yeovil full-back David Piper. Then Miquel De Souza headed over and a mazy run by Andrew Stanhope ended with a blocked shot. Yeovil sounded an early warning with Patmore scuffing a shot wide before Barrington Belgrave tested Paul Bastock with an angled drive. On 18 minutes the visitors went ahead with PATMORE evading the offside trap and looping a shot over Bastock. But Boston responded positively to dominate the remainder of the half, efforts from Wilson and Dick rattling the visitors' goal frame. Then, on 44 minutes they drew level when WILSON netted from the spot after Terry Skiverton climbed all over Fewings. Chances came and went in the second half before WILSON grabbed his second spot-kick conversion after a 74th minute Dick cross had been handled by substitute Roy O'Brien. When RAWLE coolly slotted under Tony Pennock on 87 minutes, the issue was effectively settled. But there was still time for STEELE to nod past his own keeper struggling to deal with a clearance by Bastock in stoppage time.
