Pilgrims 2-0 Torquay United

Coca-Cola League

Torquay have now visited York Street three times for Football League matches and they have yet to come away with any points. An easy win today followed a 2-1 win in 2002/3 and a 4-0 win in 2003/4. Boston began the game with the same team that had drawn at Oxford last week - even the substitutes were the same. So no return yet for David Noble or Steve Melton. Boston had the first shot of the match when Lawrie Dudfield, who earlier in the week had signed up until the end of the season, put the ball wide of the right post. Torquay then won a couple of corners that were easily dealt with before Darren Garner produced a long range effort that just missed the target. On 21 minutes Boston took the lead in spectacular fashion. Mark Greaves had been fouled 25 yards out and Ian ROSS curled the resulting free kick into the top left hand corner. On 35 minutes Greaves went off injured following a heavy challenge and was replaced by last season's "Player of the Year" Austin McCann. Just before half time Joachim headed Maylett's cross over the bar.

Torquay should have equalised two minutes into the second half following a mistake by Nathan Abbey that gave Kevin Hill an open goal to aim at, but the Torquay player somehow managed to scoop the ball over the bar. Alan White then headed the ball home from a corner only to see the effort ruled out for a foul. Torquay 'keeper Andy Marriott then produced a series of great saves to keep out shots from White and Stewart Talbot. Boston increased their lead on 61 minutes when a long cross field ball by Talbot picked out an unmarked Julian JOACHIM who made no mistake from 16 yards out. Marriott produced another fine save to deny White a few minutes later. Boston played out the remaining minutes to extend their unbeaten run to 11 games. After the match Steve Evans said: "We got two goals but it could have been six or seven. But fair play to Torquay, their lads never gave in."

United team: Nathan Abbey, Lee Canoville, Ben Futcher, Alan White, Mark Greaves (Austin McCann 34), Chris Holland (Simon Rusk 89), Brad Maylett, Ian Ross, Stewart Talbot, Julian Joachim, Lawrie Dudfield (Jason Lee 81). Subs not used: Paul Ellender, Danny Thomas.
