Matt Bloomer covers former Pilgrim Neil Grayson

Boston United 6-1 Glapwell

FA Cup

Boston United progressed to the second qualifying round in the FA Cup with a comfortable 6-1 victory over Unibond League Division One South opponents Glapwell. The Pilgrims started the game without the services of Jon Froggatt who was attending a family wedding. This allowed Liam Green to make a start and for a shuffling of the formation. New goalkeeper Martyn Margarson went straight onto the bench. Boston came close to taking the lead after three minutes. A goalmouth scramble saw a shot by Jon Rowan hit the bar and a follow up by Stewart Talbot cleared off the line. Glapwell then had a good chance when Ian Brown broke clear but Chris Wright made a great save to deny him. Glapwell took the lead on 14 minutes when a mix up in the Boston defence gave Justin BURDETT a clear sight of the goal and he found the net with an accurate shot into the bottom corner. Former Boston Player of the Year Neil Grayson then saw his free kick go just inches wide of the left post. Boston equalised on 21 minutes when neat play by Rowan and Kieran Leabon set up Steve MELTON who fired home from just inside the area. Boston went into the lead five minutes later when LEABON headed home David Farrell's deep cross.

Boston went further ahead on 33 minutes when Ollie RYAN finished off a nice set of passing moves from Green, Leabon and Rowan with an accurate finish. Boston took a 4-1 lead six minutes before the interval when RYAN got past his marker to fire home. Ten minutes into the second half Boston went further ahead. RYAN completed his hat-trick by scoring from the penalty spot after Streather had used his hand to keep out Ryan's initial shot. Liam Green was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet when his lob hit the crossbar. It wasn't until the 82nd minute that Boston got their sixth goal. Again it was from the penalty spot after Ryan had been brought down by the Glapwell 'keeper after breaking clear through the Glapwell defence. This time ROWAN stepped up to convert. After the match manager Tommy Taylor said: "First twenty-five minutes thought we was really poor even though we scored two goals. Our passing wasn't good, our quickness to the ball wasn't good, our pace of the ball going into the box wasn't good. I was really pleased for Ollie. Playing good balls into him and Jon Rowan playing off him, they done really well."
