Rothwell Town 0-2 Pilgrims

Dr Martens League

by Echo Reporter

Fired up Boston United stormed six points clear at the top of the Dr Martens Premier League last night. Steve Evans' men rattled in two early goals through David Rennie and Dave Norris to secure a comfortable win at the less than inspiring surroundings of Rothwell's Cecil Street. And although the Pilgrims should have gone on to inflict an even heftier defeat on their Northants hosts, it was an assured and competent display which brought three valuable points. With United's closest rival Bath City dropping two points in a 0-0 draw at Atherstone on Monday it was vital Boston got a win to pull further clear from their fellow promotion protagonists. The starting line-up showed just one switch to the side that overcame Dorchester 3-0 at the weekend with Steve Charles playing from the off after coming on for Peter Costello in Saturday's match. The Pilgrims pounded the Rothwell goal in the opening exchanges and surged ahead on just seven minutes as Paul Wilson swung in a corner for David RENNIE to head home. That lead was doubled five minutes later with another header as Dave NORRIS nodded in Joby Gowshall's centre.

Rothwell were finding it hard going to simply get out of their own half, let alone manage a raid on Boston's goal. In fact, it took them until 36 minutes to make any sort of telling contribution to the match when Richard Jowett rattled the crossbar in a rare attack. Rothwell's Rob Goulds was arguably very lucky to escape a second yellow card just before the break when he blatantly tripped Norris. However, the official played an advantage to Boston and decided to take no further action. United were never really looking in any danger and Paul Bastock was having one of his quietest matches of the season. And in the second half, Boston should have added to their tally with £15,000 man Lee Power twice going close. First, the new signing from Halifax almost scored a sensational goal when he tried to clip the ball into the net from the right wing with his shot only just missing the target. And then he was frustrated again as goalie John Parson recovered in time to deny a shot as he launched an effort at an open goal from long-range. Jowett steered a free header wide of the post for Rothwell, but other than that scare Boston eased through to the final whistle without any problems.
